경제 이론에 따르면,

supplier(공급자)가 goods(상품)를 과다하게 생산하여 (produce) supply(공급량)가 consumer(소비자)의 demand(수요량)를 지나치게 초과하면 물가가 하락하고 deflation(디플레이션)이 발생한다. 반대로 수요에 비해 supplier의 output(생산량)이 부족해지면 물가가 치솟고(soar) inflation(인플레이션)이 발생한다.

Recession(경기침체)은 overconsumption(과소비) 와 trade deficit(무역수지적자)등의 복합적인 요인에서 비롯되는데, 경기침체가 지속되면 개인의 consumption(소비)이 줄게 되고 자연히 판매부진에 따른 income(수입) 감소로 기업들의 bankruptcy(도산)가 빈발하고 주가가 폭락하게(plunge) 된다. 이때 정부는 부진한(sluggish) 경기를 활성화시키기(stimulate) 위해 기업에 저리의 capital(자금)융자나 세금 감면 혜택을 주기도 한다.

경제적인 측면에서 볼 때, 일시적인 boom(반짝경기)이나 갑작스런 slump(경기폭락)현상은 바람직하지 않다. 그러므로 기복이 심한(fluctuate) 경기보다는 안정된(stable)경기를 유지하도록 경제의 모든 sector(부문)가 함께 노력해야 한다. 경제를 안정시키려면 (stabilize) 경기가 활발할(brisk) 때에도 소비자는 낭비하는(extravagant) 습성을 버리고 절약하는(thrifty) 생활을 해야 한다. 또한 기업들은 설비 확충과 R&D(연구 개발)에 지속적인 investment(투자)를 하여 competitive edge(경쟁 우위)를 확보해야 한다.

정부는 국가의 infrastructure(산업 기반)를 튼튼히 하여 기업의 생산 활동을 지원해야 한다.
